Neo-Cubist portraiture
Neo-Cubism is a new form of portraiture I created
in which numerous portraits (of the same person or of family members) are painted on moveable wooden blocks. This unique form of portraiture allows for the viewer to interact with the portrait and rearrange the blocks to create a multitude of sculptural combinations.
This encourages an exploration of the identity of the painted, but also of the viewer him/herself, as how the viewer sees and interacts with the work is a just as much a reflection of his/her own identity as the piece is a reflection of the identity of the painted subject.
In this particular piece, there are 8 interchangeable portraits painted in oil paint on wooden blocks. There are 4 family members. Two portraits were painted of each person. The first was a realistic portrait and the second was in the style of their individual choosing. Each portrait was painted on 6 moveable blocks, put together to make a canvas. Each block can ultimately be moved and interchanged with pieces of the portraits of other family members to create numerous interesting combinations.
What you are viewing here are 2 sides of the complete piece.
